Description
No. 48 is a terraced town house located on Harley Street, built around 1770 as part of the Portland Estate development, with alterations made around 1900 to the ground floor. The building is constructed of stock brick, with the ground floor faced in green mosaic, and features a slate roof. It stands four storeys tall, with a basement and a dormered mansard, and has three windows across its front.
The entrance is marked by a semicircular arched doorway on the left, which has a cornice moulding that curves over it. The door is panelled and flanked by sidelights and a fanlight. The ground floor includes a c.1900 oriel window with mullioned and transomed lights, and the mosaic facing is arranged in a whorled pattern with band edging. The upper floors feature recessed sash windows beneath flat gauged red brick arches, with the first-floor windows having reveals lined out with flush architrave frames, while the third-floor sashes remain unaltered. The building has a parapet with stone coping and a cast iron balcony with a fleur-de-lis pattern on the first floor. Additionally, there are cast iron area railings that display slightly Arts and Crafts detailing.
Inside, the house retains a turned baluster geometrical staircase and cornices adorned with Arts and Crafts plasterwork and mouldings in the hall and ground floor rooms.
