Description

No. 121 is a terraced town house located on Harley Street in Westminster, dating from around 1780. It is part of the Portland Estate development, likely designed by John White. The building is constructed of stock brick with a channelled stucco ground floor and features a slate roof. It stands four storeys high with a basement and is three windows wide.

The entrance includes a broad semicircular arched doorway on the right, which has a Coade stone vermiculated surround and a head keystone. The doorway features a panelled door, sidelights, and a fanlight arranged in a Venetian window style. The upper floors have recessed sash windows under flat gauged arches, with the first-floor windows set in a blind arcade that includes stucco impost bands. There is a plat band at the first floor, a sill band at the third floor, and a parapet with stone coping. A mid-19th century scrolled cast iron balcony spans the first floor, and the area railings are made of cast iron with urn finials.

Inside, the house boasts a fine interior, highlighted by a top-lit stone geometrical staircase with a wrought iron balustrade and a palmette enriched drum for the skylight. The delicate plasterwork is in the Adam style, likely by John Papworth, and there are inlaid marble chimneypieces and mahogany doors throughout.
