Description
No. 77 Harley Street is a terraced town house built around 1774-1780 as part of the Portland Estate development by John White, in collaboration with plasterer Thomas Collins, who were associates of architect Robert Adam. The building is constructed of stock brick with a rusticated stucco ground floor and has a concealed slate roof. It stands four storeys high with a basement and features three windows across its facade.
To the left, there is a square-headed doorway framed in Coade stone with a vermiculated Gibbs surround, which includes a panelled door, sidelights, and a fanlight. The upper floors have recessed sash windows set under flat gauged arches, and the stucco work is finished with a plat band. A dentil cornice runs below the parapet, which is topped with coping. An early 19th-century cast iron balcony spans the first floor, and there are cast iron area railings with urn finials.
Inside, the house boasts a fine interior that includes a top-lit geometrical stone staircase with a wrought iron balustrade and a swag ornamented drum for the skylight. The ceilings and friezes are adorned with delicate plasterwork, and there are stucco mythological relief overmantel medallions in the typical style of Chambers. The property also features impressive inlaid marble chimneypieces with columned and pilastered designs, a fluted Doric column screen in the ground floor front room, and mahogany details throughout.
