Description

No. 86 Harley Street is a terraced town house built around 1774-1776 as part of the Portland Estate development, designed by John White in collaboration with plasterer Thomas Collins, who were associates of Sir William Chambers. The building is constructed of stock brick with a channelled stucco ground floor and features a slate roof. It has four storeys and a basement, with a three-window wide front that lacks decorative columns.

To the right, there is a broad semicircular arched doorway with a rusticated surround and a Coade head keystone. The entrance includes a panelled door, sidelights, a moulded doorhead, and a fanlight with a radial swag pattern. The upper floors have recessed sash windows under flat gauged arches, and there is a plat band at the first floor level. The parapet is topped with coping, and a continuous cast iron patterned balcony from the early to mid-19th century is present at the first floor. The area railings are made of cast iron and feature plumbed spikes.

The rear elevation is bowed, and there is a canted wing. Inside, the house retains some original features despite later alterations. Notable elements include geometrical top-lit stone staircases with a wrought iron balustrade featuring a lyre and anthemion pattern. The interiors also showcase flute and patera friezes, ceilings with wreathed panels, and stucco mythological relief medallions framed with swag and ribbon above the chimneypieces. The ground floor front room's chimneypiece has a Rococo surround that is likely a reset feature. These characteristics are typical of high-quality speculative houses built in Harley Street during the 1770s.
