TQ 2881 NE CITY OF WESTMINSTER HARLEY STREET, Wl 45/44 (East side) 10.9.54 No. 86 G.V. II Terraced town house, c.1774-76 Portland Estate development, by John White in partnership with the plasterer Thomas Collins (associates of Sir William Chambers). Stock brick with channelled stucco ground floor; slate roof. 4 storeys and basement. 3-window wide astylar front. Broad semicircular arched doorway to right with rusticated surround and Coade head keystone; panelled door, sidelights, moulded doorhead and fanlight with radial swag pattern. Recessed sashes, under flat gauged arches to upper floors. 1st floor plat band. Parapet with coping. Continuous early to mid C.19 cast iron patterned balcony to 1st floor. Cast iron plumbed spike area railings. Bowed rear elevation and canted wing. Interior retains some good original features though with later alterations; geometrical top lit stone staircases with wrought iron lyre and anthemion pattern balustrade; flute and patera friezes, some ceilings with wreathed panels and stucco mythological relief medallions with swag and ribbon framing over chimneypieces; these are of inlaid marble with pilasters or columns, the ground floor front room chimneypiece of No. 86 with Rococo surround probably reset; etc ; all features common to these speculative 1st rate houses of the 1770s in Harley Street.
