Description
Nos. 69 and 71 Harley Street are terraced townhouses built around 1773-74 as part of the Portland Estate development, likely designed by John White in collaboration with the plasterer Thomas Collins, who were associates of Sir William Chambers. The houses are constructed of stock brick with stuccoed ground floors and have concealed slate roofs. They rise four storeys with basements and feature three-window wide fronts. The doorways, located to the right, are semicircular arched and include panelled doors, sidelights, and fanlights arranged like Venetian windows. The upper floors have recessed sashes set under flat gauged arches, and the stucco work is finished with a plat band. The parapets have copings, with No. 69 displaying a stucco dentil cornice below the parapet. Mid-19th century cast iron balconies adorn No. 69, while No. 71 features early 19th-century balconies. Both houses have cast iron area railings with plumbed spike finials. The interiors are notable for their top-lit geometrical stone staircases with wrought iron balustrades, intricate plasterwork ceilings and friezes, stucco mythological medallions above the overmantels, statuary marble chimneypieces, and mahogany doors.
