Description

Nos. 120 and 122 Harley Street are a pair of terraced town houses built around 1784 as part of the Portland Estate development, likely designed by John White in collaboration with the plasterer Thomas Collins. The houses are constructed of stock brick with channelled stucco on the ground floors and feature slate roofs. No. 120 has four storeys, a basement, and a dormered mansard, while No. 122 has five storeys and a basement. Both houses have three-window wide fronts and broad semicircular arched doorways on the right side. The doors are panelled, with No. 120 featuring sidelights and No. 122 having pilastered jambs and moulded doorheads beneath fanlights. The upper floors have recessed sash windows under flat gauged arches. A plat band runs along the first floor, with a patera-band frieze and a cornice crowning the third floor, topped with a blocking course on No. 120. Early 19th-century cast iron balconies with geometric patterns are present across the first floor, along with cast iron area railings topped with urn finials. The interior of No. 120 retains several notable features, including a top-lit geometrical stone staircase with a wrought iron balustrade, delicate friezes, and inlaid marble chimneypieces.
