Description

A terrace of houses at 11-15 Stanhope Place, dating from approximately 1840-45, was likely designed by George Ledwell Taylor and intended to complement numbers 1 to 5 on the opposite side of the street. The houses are constructed of stucco with slate roofs. They are four storeys high, including an attic storey and basement, and each front is two windows wide. Number 11 projects forward in a segmental bow, mirroring the design of number 5. Each house has a projecting Greek Doric portico-porch to the left of the front entrance. The recessed sash windows have cornices above those on the first floor. A continuous main entablature runs above the second floor. A cast iron balcony spans the first floor, and cast iron spearhead area railings are present. The terrace forms part of Tyburnia, a development on the Bishop of London’s Estate that commenced after 1827, originally planned by S.P. Cockerell, but later laid out to a modified plan by George Gutch.
