Description

Nos 58-59 South Street is a mews house and garage linked to no. 36 Hill Street by an underground corridor. It dates from the mid 18th century, with an early 19th-century garden front, and was remodelled around 1936 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The building is constructed of rendered brick and features a central bay defined by a mannerist design of disappearing pilasters that separate three first-floor windows. The outer pilasters only extend to the foundation plinth. It has a slate hipped roof with a central pediment and a moulded eaves cornice. The structure is two storeys high with six windows. The central bay includes two architraved, recessed entrances with cornice woods and part-glazed, panelled doors, flanking a circle-in-square window. To the left, there is another recessed entrance with a part-glazed, panelled door and a two-light window with small panes above. The windows are 12-pane sashes. The early 19th-century garden front is made of darkened yellow stock brick with red brick dressings and features round-arched openings on the ground floor. The entrance has a panelled door with narrow sidelights and a radial fanlight, along with recessed sashes that have thick glazing bars. Inside, there is a mid 18th-century staircase with urn and baluster posts, square newels, and a broad handrail, as well as a mid 18th-century door and doorcase leading to the first floor. Lutyens' extensive and well-documented remodelling includes a Chinese-style latticed stair and a well-designed living room that overlooks a sunken garden, also created by Lutyens.
