Description
Nos 61 and 62 Wimpole Street are terraced townhouses built around 1770-1780 as part of the Portland Estate development. They are constructed of stock brick with a channelled stucco ground floor and feature slate roofs. The buildings rise four storeys above basements and have three-window wide facades without stylistic embellishments.
Each house has semicircular arched doorways on either side, with No 61 showcasing a stuccoed Doric columned porch and balustrade, while No 62 features spaced vermiculated rustications. Both houses have panelled doors, sidelights, and fanlights in a plain Venetian style. The windows are recessed sashes, with those on the ground floor of No 61 adorned with vermiculated dressings, all set under flat gauged arches on the upper floors. A plat band runs above the ground floor stuccowork, and there is a parapet with coping.
No 61 includes a bracketed balustraded balcony on the first floor, while No 62 has a cast iron balconette supported by stucco brackets. The area railings for No 61 are spearhead style, and No 62 features railings from around 1900, topped with tall urn-capped neo-Georgian standards. The interiors have not been inspected.
