Description
This is a corner block of large town houses on Wimpole Street, dating from 1892 to 1893. The building is constructed of pink terracotta and has a tiled roof. It is designed in an ornate Flemish Renaissance style, featuring detailed enrichment on a smaller scale. The building is five storeys high with an attic, and sits on a basement. The front elevation has three large bay windows with gables over alternating bays, with narrower windows in between. Recessed, coffered, barrel-vaulted porches are located in the narrower bays, each with a hood supported by console brackets and tall parapets. The rectangular bays contain mullioned and transomed windows; those on the third floor have round arched top lights. The narrow windows between the bays have steep pediments and bowed oriel balconettes on the second and third floors. The return elevation to New Cavendish Street includes a four-storey bow and a four-storey rectangular bay with similar detailing. The ground floor here is built out with mullioned and transomed windows and two banded, vaulted, enriched doorways. The Dutch gables have arcaded lights, with two-window dormers set between them. String courses and enriched aprons are present throughout. The gables are flanked by turret finials, and there is a small, ornate corner turret. Scrollwork cast iron area railings are a notable feature.
