Description

This is a mews studio building dating from 1861, originally built for the sculptor Thomas Woolner, situated behind his house at No. 29 Welbeck Street. The building is constructed of polychromatic brick with a slate roof, and displays a restrained Venetian Gothic style. It comprises two storeys to the left and a single-storey studio to the right, arranged over two asymmetrical bays. The two-storey section features double doors beneath a wide segmental arch, and two narrow segmental arched windows on the first floor, with a balconette. A relieving arch sits above the first-floor windows, featuring a roundel within a tympanum of herring-bone brickwork. The studio section has a large studio light, altered to become a skylight with a glazed lantern. The roof ridge is finished with ornamental iron finials. The interior retains original fittings, including collar trusses supporting an open timber roof structure, supported on corbels elaborately carved by James O'Shea. Additional features include wrought iron tie rods, an iron spiral staircase, and original door locks.
