Description

17 Wimpole Street is a first-rate terraced town house built in the 1760s as part of the Portland Estate development. The building is constructed of stock brick with a channelled stucco ground floor, topped by a slate roof. The front elevation is distinguished by a fine, Doric porch in the style of Robert Adam and a well-preserved set of railings with integral lampholders.

The house is four storeys high, with a basement, and has a facade of four windows. A semicircular, rusticated doorway is located in the second bay from the left, leading to a shallow, Doric columned porch. The doorway is topped by a triglyphed frieze and an open pediment with a panelled soffit. The upper floors contain recessed sash windows, each set within a flat, gauged arch. A plat band runs above the stucco ground floor. A parapet with coping tops the building. An early to mid-19th century iron balcony is present. The wrought iron area railings rise up the steps, featuring flamboyant torch finials, scrollwork lampholders, and link extinguishers.

The interior retains several original features, including a front compartment staircase with a wrought iron balustrade, decorative plasterwork, statuary, and carved marble and chimney pieces.
