Description
Devonshire House is a large office building located in the City of Westminster, constructed between 1924 and 1926 by the American architectural firm Carrere and Hastings in collaboration with Professor Reilly. The building features a steel frame clad in Portland stone, showcasing a style that blends Glasgow and American classicism with some lively Graeco-Roman details, including relief plaques.
The main structure is very tall, consisting of seven storeys plus a sheer attic storey and a mezzanine between the ground and first floors. It has projecting corner pavilions that rise five storeys and include attic space. The ground and mezzanine floors of the main block are set at an advanced level compared to the corner pavilions, which face Piccadilly. The overall design includes 15 bays, with three bays in each pavilion and nine bays in the main block.
The ground floor features large display windows that are framed by channelled piers and pilasters, supporting a deep entablature. The flanking pavilions are fully rusticated, and the main block is topped with an elaborate cornice that has dentils and modillions. The return elevations are similarly designed, and the rear facade facing Mayfair Place includes a giant Doric colonnade that spans two storeys, extending from the main block over the pavement.
The interior has been altered in the late 20th century, but the showrooms facing Piccadilly still retain some original plasterwork and other features.
