Description
Wimbourne House is a town mansion built around 1740 to 1755 by William Kent and completed by Stephen Wright for Henry Pelham. The building underwent significant alterations and extensions in the late 18th century and mid-19th century on the forecourt side, but was "reinstated" in the late 1970s with the demolition of the forebuilding. It is constructed of yellow brick with a slate roof and has three storeys, a basement, and a dormered attic.
The west front facing Green Park is intact and features 11 bays arranged in a rhythm of 3:3:1:3:1, with the triplets consisting of full-height canted bays. The windows are recessed glazing bar sashes set under flat gauged arches, and there are stone plat bands at the ground and first floors, along with a stone bracketed cornice and blocking course. All windows are adorned with wrought iron balconettes.
The entrance front has a "reinstated" symmetrical elevation with five windows and a central doorway. Inside, there is notable work by Kent, including a galleried staircase compartment with a coffered ceiling and a very fine saloon at the center of the west front. The saloon features a coffered ceiling with red and blue panels and small relief figures, similar to those found at 44 Berkeley Square. East of the saloon is another fine room with Kent decoration, along with sumptuous 19th-century work.
