Description

This is a row of three terraced houses at Nos. 26-28 Knox Street, located in the City of Westminster and built around 1810 to 1820 as part of the Portman Estate development. Originally designed as "4th rate" houses with ground-floor shops, they are now residential. The houses are constructed of stock brick, with No. 28 having a painted facade. The ground floors retain delicately panelled former shop fronts, each with a square-headed doorway (one is now blind), and a broad, multi-paned sash window. No. 28's shop front has panelled risers and sides. The upper floors feature broad, recessed sash windows with glazing bars under flat, gauged arches, except for No. 28 which has segmental arches. The roofs are concealed behind parapets with copings, the coping on No. 27 being a replacement. Original cast iron area railings with urn finials remain.
