Description

Nos. 44 to 48 Bryanston Square are terraced townhouses built in 1811 by Joseph Parkinson for the Portman Estate. The houses are constructed of brown brick with banded stucco rustication on the ground floor, while No. 48 is entirely stuccoed. They feature concealed slate roofs and were originally part of a complete terrace that balanced the east side of the square. No. 48 serves as a larger end house, designed as a terminal pavilion with an Ionic order and a pedimented attic.

The buildings rise four to five storeys above a basement, with each front consisting of three windows, except for No. 48, which has a five-window front. The doorways are located to the left and are framed by inset Greek Doric columns, with panelled doors and semicircular fanlights. The entrance to No. 48 is set in the return and features a mid-19th century stuccoed Ionic porch.

The upper floors have recessed sashes, some of which retain their glazing bars, and are topped with gauged flat arches. No. 48 is distinguished by its first and second floors, which are articulated by Ionic flanking pilasters and engaged columns at the centre, supporting an entablature. The attic storey includes pilaster strips, a cornice, and a blocking course, with a pediment over the central three bays. The other houses have continuous cast iron balconies on the first floor and crowning stucco cornices and blocking courses. Additionally, there are cast iron area railings with urn finials.
