Description

These are a terrace of town houses built in 1811 by Joseph Parkinson for the Portman Estate. They are located on Bryanston Square, extending to Lissom Grove. Originally part of a complete terrace balancing the west side of the square, they are numbered 27 to 32, with numbers 27 and 28 forming a terminal pavilion. Numbers 1 to 21 are listed separately, and the south end is represented by numbers 44 to 48.

The houses are constructed of brown brick with banded stucco rustication to the ground floor; numbers 27 and 28 are entirely stuccoed. They have concealed slate roofs. The facades are generally three windows wide, with numbers 27 and 28 unified into a five-window composition, featuring an entrance to number 27 on the return to Bryanston Place. Doorways, where present, have panelled doors and semicircular fanlights, with inset Greek Doric columns for numbers 29 to 32. The windows are recessed sash windows, some retaining glazing bars, set under flat gauged arches to the brick upper floors. Numbers 27 and 28 have their first and second floors articulated with an Ionic order, featuring flanking pilasters and engaged columns supporting an entablature. The attic storey has pilaster strips, a cornice, a blocking course, and a partly altered pedimented gable over the central three bays, with later attic heightening to the left side. The remaining houses have continuous cast iron balconies on the first floor, along with a stucco cornice and blocking course at the top. The Bryanston Place return of number 27 features a full-height bow to the right of the doorway. Cast iron area railings with urn finials are present.
