Description
This is a row of terraced houses at numbers 32 to 40 York Street, built around 1810 to 1820 as part of the Portman Estate development linked to Gloucester Place. The houses are constructed of stock brick with stuccoed ground floors, number 40 having channelled stucco. They have concealed slate roofs. The buildings are four storeys high and include basements. Each house has a front two windows wide. Semicircular arched doorways are present on the right-hand side. The doors have reeded heads and jambs, with numbers 34 to 38 retaining patterned fanlights above. The windows are recessed sash windows; numbers 32, 34 and 40 still have glazing bars, all set within flat, gauged arches. Number 40 features stucco architraves to the upper floors, with the first-floor windows accentuated by cornices supported on consoles. Decorative stucco detail finishes with a plat band at the first-floor level. A crowning stucco cornice and blocking course tops the facades. Continuous cast iron balconies with a geometric pattern run along the first floor. The cast iron area railings are topped with urn finials.
