Description
Nos. 1 to 7 on Meard Street are a uniform terrace of houses built around 1732 by John Meard. They are constructed from brown stock brick with red brick dressings and feature a stuccoed ground floor, topped with a slate roof. The terrace consists of four storeys and a basement, with each house having three windows across the front. The party walls between Nos. 1 and 3 and between Nos. 5 and 7 are wider.
The ground floor has a mock-jointed stucco finish that extends up to the first-floor sill band. The doorways are positioned to the left and right of Nos. 1 and 7, and paired between Nos. 3 and 5. Each doorway features wooden architrave doorcases flanked by thin panelled strips and boldly carved consoles that support cornice hoods. The doors are six-panel designs with rectangular fanlights above, and there are panelled key blocks that rise to the cornice bed moulds. The windows are flush framed sashes with later 19th-century glazing, set within red brick dressings and under flat gauged red brick arches. The terrace is topped with a parapet that has coping, and there are wrought iron area railings with urn finials.
Inside, the houses are fully panelled and follow a conventional passage hall layout with a dog leg staircase plan and a closet wing. Nos. 3 and 5 share a mirrored layout. Doric pilasters frame the opening from the passage to the stairwell, and the staircase features open string construction with carved tread ends, Doric turned balusters, and newels, along with a box cornice. The terrace is noted for its architectural significance, and similar contemporary buildings can be found at Nos. 67 to 70 Dean Street, also designed by Meard.
