Description

The lamp post located at the corner of Henrietta Street and Southampton Street is a gas street light featuring an Eddystone type column, which dates back to 1910 and was manufactured by Revo of Tipton. The lamp post includes an Upright Rochester lantern, likely installed around 1930.

This lamp post is made of cast iron and has a glazed lantern constructed from iron, spun copper, and enamelled steel. The column is tapering and fluted, identified as model 1275 in the William Sugg catalogue, known as the 'Eddystone'. The base of the column displays the Westminster City Council crest embossed on one side, along with a registration plaque numbered 3572. On the opposite side, there is the royal cypher G V R and the date 1910. Additionally, a plaque indicates the manufacturer of the column: REVO TIPTON.

The lantern features a circular, weatherproof chimney above an inverted, six-mantle burner encased in a teardrop-shaped glass enclosure, which includes a drainage hole at its base. The main body of the lantern is supported by two upright arms that extend at right angles from a cast iron control clock box. These arms support a horizontal enamelled steel reflector that supplies gas to the burner. The arms also retain parts of their original decorative ironwork scrolls, characteristic of inter-war Rochester lanterns.
