Description

The Covent Garden Market Building, a Grade II* listed structure, was constructed between 1828 and 1830 by Charles Fowler. This former covered market features granite, stock brick, and stucco, topped with slate and glass roofs. The design showcases a neo-classical style with triple ranges. The north and south elevations are adorned with 12 bay granite monolith Doric colonnades that flank central two-storey Venetian entrances, which are pedimented. The ranges conclude with square two-storey lodge pavilions that have pyramidal chimney-finialed lead roofs.

At the east end, there is a four-deep Doric column portico with a balustraded terrace and a pediment gable, which is decorated with urns and a sculptural group that marks The Central Avenue. This area features an arcade of restored shops with mezzanine windows set within the arcade, and five attic storey lights above each bay, positioned behind dwarf Doric columns, all covered by a glazed roof supported by kingpost trusses.

The former open market spaces between the ranges were roofed in 1874-75 and 1888-89 by Cubitt's, using iron columns linked by skeleton arches that support semicircular trusses of a glazed and slated roof with an open clerestory. The west front of the Central Avenue includes a five-bay colonnade that supports a first floor with seven windows, framed by an entablature arched over the centre and capped with a pediment gable. Five-bay colonnades also flank the inner faces of the outer ranges at the west end, balancing the central feature. The entire complex has been restored by the Greater London Council.
