Description

This gas street lamp is located outside the Jubilee Market Hall on Southampton Street. The cast iron column dates from 1910 and is identified as model 1275, known as the 'Eddystone', based on a William Sugg catalogue. Around 1980, the original lantern was replaced with an Upright Rochester lantern, manufactured by Sugg Lighting Limited. The column has a tapering, fluted design and features the Westminster City Council crest embossed on one side, along with the royal monogram G V R and the date 1910 on the opposite side. The lantern has a circular, weatherproof chimney above an inverted six-mantle burner enclosed within a teardrop-shaped glass housing with a drainage hole. The burner is supplied with gas via a control clock box and upright arms, which pass through an enamelled steel reflector. The lamp post is constructed from cast iron, spun copper and enamelled steel, with glazed elements.
