Description

42 Maiden Lane is a commercial and works premises built in 1873 by S.J. Nicholl for Cox and Sons, who manufactured church furniture and stained glass. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof. It showcases High Victorian Gothic architecture with flamboyant details, designed functionally for its intended use.

The structure has four tall storeys and a two-tier attic, with two major bays; the left side features a double bay. The entrance is located in a single bay, recessed and accessed by steps, with a ribbed "Tudor" surround and curved corners on the lintel, which is adorned with decorated spandrels. The double bay on the ground floor contains a pair of large cast iron mullion and transom display windows. The first and second floor windows are vertically grouped in slightly recessed panels, featuring three-light transomed pairs of casements in the double bay and panelled and glazed former hoist doors above the entrance in the single bay. All windows have curved cornered lintels, with the panels linked by stone flattened ogee drip moulds, carved stops, and finials. The third floor windows are set within a toothed brick corbelled lintel panel. The parapet is supported by arcaded corbelling, with shed lights for the attic workshops flanked by two-storey gabled stone and brick dormers. A cast iron Gothic cresting rail is positioned over the shed lights, and there is a fine cast iron Gothic rainwater head inscribed with the date.

Additionally, a wall-mounted Grosvenor gas lantern is present on the Maiden Lane elevation, featuring decorative scrollwork on its bracket.
