Description

The two lamp posts located outside numbers 7 and 21 Cecil Court are a matching pair of gas streetlights, made of cast iron and dating from around 1890. They feature Upright Rochester lanterns, manufactured by William Sugg and Company Limited, which were likely installed around 1930.

These lamp posts are centrally positioned in the pedestrianised Cecil Court, each standing approximately 3 meters tall. The columns have an ornate 'St Martin's' design, with a spiral pattern on the shafts. The name of the original parish, ST MARTIN IN THE FIELDS, is embossed on one side of the base of each column, above a worn relief showing a mounted St Martin sharing his cloak with a beggar. Each column includes a ladder rest with decorative scrollwork on one side, which is an unusual asymmetrical feature. Above the ladder rest, there is a moulded collar and a short shaft extension that was added when the Rochester lanterns were installed to enhance their height and light distribution.

Each lantern is designed with a circular, weatherproof chimney above an inverted six-mantle burner, which is enclosed in a spherical glass casing that has a drainage hole at the base. The main body of each lantern is supported by a pair of upright arms that extend at right angles from the cast-iron control clock box, passing through the enamelled steel reflector to supply gas to the burner.
