Description

The Garrick Theatre is a theatre dating from 1889, designed by C J Phipps. It is an example of eclectic classicism and is of group value. The front facade is painted stucco, with a concealed roof. It is two tall storeys high, with a sheer attic, and five bays wide. The ground floor is rusticated and arcaded, providing access to the foyer. A Corinthian colonnade leads to a balustraded first-floor loggia, with arcaded windows behind. There is an enriched frieze to the main entablature, and a balustraded attic with oculi windows. The front facade continues to the right with a screen wall leading to the body of the theatre, which is set on a Portland stone podium. The first part is faced in Bath stone with a stucco entablature over the three pilastered central bays; the second part is also faced in Bath stone with an arcaded first floor. The interior retains many original features, including the foyer and staircase, which lead to a fine auditorium. This includes a dress circle, upper circle, and gallery, with neo-Rococo plasterwork to the balcony front, boxes, and the central dome of the ceiling.
