Description
Wyndham's Theatre is a theatre built in 1899 by W.G.R. Sprague. It features a Portland stone facing and a concealed roof, showcasing a free classical facade. The building is two and three storeys high with attics and is five windows wide. The centerpiece includes a triple group of foyer doorways topped by mezzanine oculi in enriched frames. There is a balustraded loggia on the first floor with Ionic pilasters that separate the arcaded windows, and above the entablature is a sculpted pediment against a blind attic. The taller single bay wings have archivolt arched openings on the ground and first floors, two mezzanine windows at pediment level, and two attic windows. A glass and iron canopy from the 1920s covers the ground floor. Inside, the auditorium is finely preserved with elegant "Louis XVI" plasterwork on the balconies of the horseshoe dress and upper circles, a steeply raked gallery, ornate stage boxes, and a richly gilded architectural frame around the proscenium arch.
