Description

No. 11 Brick Street is a former stable and coach house, now used as garaging, built between 1882 and 1883 by James Brooks for the Marquis of Londonderry. The building is constructed of red brick with rubbed brick and terracotta dressings, topped with a slate roof that features high stacks on the front elevation. It has a courtyard plan, with a central carriage entrance on the front intended to provide ground-floor accommodation for stable hands and a first-floor suite for the coachman.

To the right, there is a separate block that originally housed loose boxes, with the coach house located at the rear. The narrow range to the left, which was also originally stables, is now used for garaging and has an extended modern canopy that is not of interest. The street elevation consists of seven bays, featuring a central carriage entrance framed by a terracotta Gibbs surround with a decorated keystone and a three-light terracotta oriel. The double doors have decorative ironwork in open panels, and there is a circular window to the right. The remaining windows include 8 and 12-light sashes set under segmental heads with keystones.

At the rear of the building, there are elaborate Dutch gables with pyramidal tops, including a central gable with moulded brick niches and the arms of the Marquis of Londonderry above an altered window. The western elevation features similar gables with ball finials and original glazing. One door on this elevation is topped with an elaborate shell hood. Inside, the building retains some teak doors, moulded glazed tilework, and cast iron columns.
