Description
No 12 Hertford Street is a terraced town house built around 1768-70 as part of the development of the south side of Hertford Street by the elder Henry Holland and his son, in partnership with John Eldridge. The building features brown brick with added stucco dressings and a slate roof. It stands four storeys high, including an attic storey and a dormered mansard, and has a basement. The façade is three windows wide, with a doorway to the left that has an ornate fanlight set in a boldly modelled surround, complete with a keystone and a cornice-hood supported by consoles.
The windows are recessed sash types without glazing bars, featuring cornices on consoles for the ground and second floors, while the first-floor windows have segmental pediments on either side of a central triangular pediment, all supported by consoles. A main entablature is present over the second floor, along with an attic cornice and a blocking course. The dormers are segmental pedimented. A cast iron balcony spans the first floor, and there are 18th-century wrought iron area railings with lampholders and link extinguishers flanking the entrance.
