Description

Christchurch is a church built in 1865 by F. and H. Francis, with an enlargement completed in 1868. It is located on a corner site with Brick Street and features a design in the 14th century Decorated Gothic style, using ragstone and showcasing reticulated window tracery. The church has a nave and a two-bay northeast transept. Inside, the polychromatic brick and stonework has been largely whitened over, and there is a timber barrel vaulted roof with very naturalistic leaf capitals on the columns. Notable fittings include a reredos dedicated to Thomas Henry Hope of Deepdene, Arts and Crafts metalwork in the west gallery, and stained glass in the nave by R. L. Hesketh from 1906. The glass in the east window and transept is likely by Clayton and Bell.
