Description

A pair of terraced townhouses, now combined as a single property, located on Hertford Street, Westminster. No. 23 was constructed around 1764-66 by plasterers John Dillman and Paul Engleheart, likely based on a design by John Phillips, a lesser-known architect and master builder. No. 22 dates from approximately 1765-66 and was built by Henry Holland (a builder from Fulham), along with his son and John Eldridge, as part of Holland's development of the south side of Hertford Street. The buildings were altered and converted into flats in 1921.

The facades are of darkened brick with a rusticated stucco ground floor, and have a slate roof. They rise over four storeys, with a basement and a dormered mansard roof. The buildings have a width of six windows. The entrance to the right of the former No. 22 is accessed via a flight of steps leading to a double-panelled door with side lights, all topped by a segmental fanlight, and sheltered by an early to mid-19th century stucco porch with Doric columns. The adjacent former entrance to No. 23 has been altered to a large window, and the steps removed. The windows are recessed casements, installed in 1921, set within flat, gauged red brick arches with red brick dressings. A stucco sill band is visible on the first floor, interrupted by the window sills. The building has a parapet with coping. An early 19th-century cast iron balcony in a Gothic pattern runs across the first floor.
