Description
No 17 Hertford Street is a terraced corner town house built around 1768 as part of the development of the south side of Hertford Street by the elder Henry Holland, along with his son and in partnership with John Eldridge. The building has been altered for a restaurant in the mid-20th century. It features brown brick construction and a slate roof, standing four storeys tall with a basement. The facade is three windows wide, with a three-window return. There is a recessed doorway to the left, which has a patterned fanlight, and a mid-20th century restaurant frontage. The upper floors still have recessed glazing bar sash windows set under flat gauged arches. A stone sill band runs along the first floor, and there is a parapet with coping. The property is enclosed by cast iron area railings. This house was the residence of the Holland family, with Henry Holland junior, the architect, living here after marrying "Capability" Brown's daughter in 1773. The listing emphasizes its association with the Holland family and its group value.
