Description
No. 54 Poland Street is a terrace house built in 1704, with early 19th century and mid-20th century alterations. The building features dark red brick with light red brick dressings and has a slate roof. It stands three storeys tall, with a basement and a dormered mansard roof. The façade is three windows wide, plus a half window bay to the right. The ground floor is stuccoed, with a renewed panelled architrave and a consoled cornice, and a doorway to the left. There are two flat arched recessed windows with 20th century glazing to the right. The upper floors have recessed sash windows without glazing bars, set under flat gauged arches, and include blind half windows to the right. A plat band runs above the ground floor, topped by a parapet with coping. Inside, the building features a panelled passage-hall and a pilastered opening leading to the stair compartment, which contains an open carved string dog leg staircase with turned balusters and column newels.
