Description
This is a terrace of houses located on Meard Street, built around 1722-1723, likely by John Meard. The terrace was restored by Quinlan Terry between 1983 and 1984. The houses are constructed of brown brick with rubbed brick dressings, and the ground floor is stuccoed, while the roofs are tiled. Each house has four storeys and a basement, with three windows across the front, creating a uniform appearance, although No. 58 has some variations. The doorways are positioned to the right of each front and feature wooden architrave cases with carved consoles that support cornices, along with six-panel doors topped by rectangular fanlights, likely designed by John Heard. The windows are recessed box frame sashes with later 18th-century or renewed glazing bars, set under segmented red brick arches. There are red brick plat bands between the storeys and a parapet with coping, though No. 58 only has a plat band at the first floor and a painted cornice over the second floor. The interiors of the houses have an identical layout of two rooms in depth, with stairs flanking the rear room and a small closet wing. They are fully panelled, although there have been repairs and alterations made in the 1980s. The staircase features dog leg design with carved cut strings and turned balusters. Notably, No. 54 was the residence of Charles Bridgeman, a landscape architect, from 1723 to 1738, as indicated by a plaque from the Greater London Council.
