Description
The Lister Institute of Preventative Medicine is a hospital built between 1894 and 1898, with a northern addition completed in 1909-1910, designed by Alfred and Paul Waterhouse. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a pitched tiled roof in a free Flemish style. It stands four storeys tall with an attic and has 16 bays, with windows arranged in pairs. The design is symmetrical, with the central four bays set forward, and the 12 end bays topped with gabled attics. The entrance is located to the left and has a segmental hood. Most windows are square-headed, except for the large semicircular windows at the ground floor center, which are flanked by paired Ionic pilasters. The ground and first floors have sash windows with margin glazing, while the second and third floors feature mullioned windows set within arched reveals. The end pairs of bays are connected by semicircular bay windows that extend from the ground to the second floors. The building has a sunk parapet and a return to the right that includes bay windows with turrets. Wrought iron area railings are present. The interior has not been inspected.
