Description
The Royal Victoria Infirmary Administration Block is a hospital office building constructed between 1901 and 1906, with its foundation stone laid in 1900 by the Prince of Wales. Designed by W. L. Newcombe and Percy Adams, after consulting Sir A. Waterhouse, the building features a sandstone ashlar ground floor, a central pavilion, and central sections of the end pavilions, while the rest is made of bright red brick with ashlar dressings. The roof is covered with graduated Lakeland slate.
The structure has three storeys and attics, comprising 17 bays in total, with a three-bay central section and end pavilions. It includes a central porte-cochere and pilasters on the pavilions topped with central pediments, with a segmental shape over the entrance bay. The end pavilions feature central canted bay windows on the ground floor. All windows are stone mullioned and transomed, adorned with leaded lights. Each outer section has three flat-headed dormers, and the central attic is framed in a stone surround that connects with a coped parapet. The high roof is hipped over the pavilions and includes a central lantern and tall brick chimneys with ashlar cornices.
Inside, the building showcases a groined inner porch with four bronze commemorative plaques that honor gifts from Lord and Lady Armstrong and others. The entrance hall and gallery are panelled with inlay in a Baroque style, featuring extensive floral decorations in the stucco frieze and ceiling.
