Description

Number 18 and its gate and area railings are a house dating to around 1846, situated on the south side of St. Thomas’ Crescent in Newcastle upon Tyne. The building is constructed of English garden wall bond brick with an ashlar basement and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof. It has a basement and two storeys, with three bays. A central flight of steps leads to a four-panelled door with a three-pane overlight, featuring aprons to the sash windows and delicate glazing bars. Wedge stone lintels are above the first-floor windows, while the ground-floor windows have architraves. A prominent first-floor band is accented by ashlar corniced pilasters at the ends, and an eaves band with a gutter cornice runs along the roofline. The hipped roof has an ashlar-corniced brick chimney at the right end. A projecting right-end bay of the adjacent St. Thomas’ Terrace is visible on the left return, and incorporates corner pilasters as a continuation. Area railings and a gate, made of cast iron, feature spear-headed details, small balusters, and hand-rails.
