Description
The gates, lodges, and railings at the Royal Victoria Infirmary were built between 1900 and 1905, with some minor alterations made in the 20th century. They are constructed from red brick with ashlar dressings, featuring slate roofs and iron railings and gates. The design was created by architects W L Newcombe and Percy Adams.
The south lodge has a square cross plan and is a single storey structure with an ashlar plinth, a moulded ashlar eaves band, a cornice, and a parapet. It has a hipped slate roof with a central brick and ashlar chimney stack. The east and west fronts of the lodge feature central pilaster porticoes with three sash windows each. The main north front is distinguished by a full portico supported by four columns.
An iron pedestrian gate connects the lodge to a square gate pier. There is also an iron gate linked to this lodge, along with a brick gate pier. The attached railings extend along Queen Victoria Street and include another set of gates. These railings continue along Richardson Road and the passage to the north of the hospital site. They consist of plain spearhead iron railings set on low brick walls with chamfered ashlar coping. The regularly spaced piers are made of four thick iron sections topped with ornate domed lanterns.
