Description

The Pharmacy Department of the Department of Adult Education at the University of Manchester is a medical school building constructed in 1874 by Alfred Waterhouse. It features pale yellow brick with sandstone dressings and red tiled roofs, arranged in an irregular L-shaped plan. The main range, which is parallel to the street, has a set-back continuation on the left and a rear wing. The building has four and two storeys, with the four-storey main range consisting of nine wide bays. The first bay, which includes the entrance, is designed as a corner tower, while the second and ninth bays are wider and gabled. These bays are adorned with corner pinnacles, and the corner tower is topped with a slated spirelet.

The main range has stone sill-bands and head-bands, as well as cusped stone niches between the bays at the top floor. A moulded cornice and parapet complete the design. The corner tower features large two-centred moulded entrance arches on each side at the ground floor and a first-floor oriel on the left side. The ground, first, and second floors have large sashed windows, varying from one to three lights, while the third floor has stone mullioned four-light sashed windows. The gables are decorated with three-bay arcades of arched windows.

The continuation to the left has two unequal storeys and seven narrow bays, with a tall ground floor supported by buttresses, tall cross-windows with arched lights, and corbel tables. The first floor has three-light mullioned windows, with gabled dormers above the second and sixth bays, and a continuous skylight between these. A fleche is positioned on the ridge. The rear wing is designed in a similar style, featuring steeply-pitched roofs and dormers. The interior has not been inspected.
