Description
The Royal Infirmary, specifically the Waterhouse Building, is a hospital constructed between 1887 and 1890 by A. Waterhouse. It is built from common brick, featuring red brick and terracotta dressings, with a slate roof. The building has a symmetrical front that rises four storeys and an attic, comprising 11 bays. The two outer bays project, while the three central bays break forward, all topped with gables. Most windows are paired sash windows without glazing bars, with smaller round-headed windows on the top floor. The roof includes four wooden gabled dormers and three tall brick chimney stacks. A ventilating spire with louvred openings is situated on the ridge. The porte cochere features a round relieving arch that contains two round-headed lights with iron grilles and a blind roundel, with a gable flanked by pinnacles above. The returns of the building have round arches beneath gables. Inside, the chapel includes aisles supported by round columns and round arches, leading to a three-sided apse, all adorned with patterned tiles in green, grey, and blue.
