Description
Barclays Bank, located at No 1 Prescot Street and including No 2 Moss Street, is an early 20th-century bank building. It features a Portland stone exterior with a granite ground floor and a slate roof. The structure has three storeys and an attic, with one bay facing Prescot Street, a canted corner bay, and five bays along Moss Street.
The ground floor showcases round-headed windows with triple keystones, and the corner bay has an entrance flanked by Ionic columns and a cornice. The ground floor windows have casements, while the upper windows are sashed with glazing bars. The upper two storeys of the corner bay are framed by giant Ionic columns, featuring a round eye above a window with a broken pediment and a balustraded balcony.
On the Moss Street facade, the first-floor windows are adorned with eared architraves, triple keystones, and cornices, with the central window boasting an open pediment. The second floor has paired windows supported by Tuscan colonnettes. The attic, set on a mansard roof, displays alternating segmental and triangular pediments.
An octagonal corner tower is decorated with swags, and its upper stage features round-arched openings with triple keystones and convex balustraded balconies, topped with a stone cupola and urn. The Prescot Street facade includes a Venetian window on the first floor.
