Description
The Students Union (old part only) is a union building constructed between 1910 and 1913, designed by Sir C. Reilly. It features a combination of stone and brick and stands three storeys tall with a basement, comprising six bays. The ground floor is made of stone and includes elliptical-headed windows and an entrance located in the end bay. Foliage bands are present at the heads and keystones of the windows. Heavy paired consoles support an entablature and a balcony that has iron panels between stone piers. The first-floor windows are framed with flat architraves, friezes, and cornices, while the second floor showcases round windows. At the top, there is an entablature adorned with anthemion cresting and a brick parapet. The basement is enclosed by railings between stone piers, which also feature iron lamp stands.
On the right return, there are seven bays, with a central three-bay projection that includes a second floor designed as a Tuscan distyle-in-antis portico supported by brick columns. The frieze here is inscribed 'GILMOUR HALL', and the flanking bays are bowed. The facade facing Mount Pleasant has a stone ground floor, rusticated quoins, a frieze, and a cornice, topped by a brick parapet. This facade consists of two bays, with the second bay projecting forward and featuring a two-storey bowed window. The ground floor is enhanced by an applied Doric colonnade, while the first floor has iron supports for the frieze, cornice, and a tented roof. There is a later extension to the south, but it is not of special interest.
Inside, the square entrance hall is defined by fluted pilasters in the corners. The front and rear staircases are adorned with iron balusters. Gilmour Hall features four shallow segmental apses with Doric columns at the ends. The richly decorated coffered ceiling retains its original colour scheme, and the end apses have flat pilasters and high-placed windows with lattice grilles. The east apse includes a chair and flanking benches in a Greek style, while the opposite apse is deeper and features a gallery with lattice patterning and a clock flanked by Greek sphinxes. The entrances are embellished with richly decorated doorcases and paired three-panel doors, which are also richly decorated. Three chandeliers in Greek style complete the interior.
