Description

A group of terraced houses located at 39-47 South Street, Westminster, built between 1896 and 1898 by J.J. Stevenson. The buildings are constructed of red brick with stone dressings and Westmorland slate roofs. The design is a rich and freely eclectic combination of Franco-Flemish and Jacobethan Queen Anne styles. The terrace is presented as two semi-detached pairs and a detached house due to deep recessions that provide light to the staircases, although the main rooms face St George's Gardens with a more unified and restrained elevation. The fronts are three storeys and have a basement, featuring two tiers of dormers within steeply pitched, pavilion-shaped roofs. Each house front is two or three windows wide, with recessed areas between them. Nos. 39-41 and 43-45 have paired arched, recessed porches in the centre, while No. 47 features a similar doorway on its right side. Sash windows with leaded panes and mullions and transoms are aligned with the doorways. Four-storey stone mullioned oriels are finished with leaded turret roofs. The houses are linked at ground floor level. A stone, semi-domed bay window is located to the side of No. 39. There are pedimented dormers to the first attic storey, and prominent chimney stacks between the houses. Stone balconies are located on the first floor. Wrought ironwork weathervanes are on top of the turrets. The property has ornate area railings and brick piers topped with ball finials. The rear elevation is a more restrained Queen Anne style, with Venetian windows, bay windows, and a first-floor balustraded balcony.
