Description

Alginate House is a Grade II listed building located on Henrietta Street in the City of Westminster. It was constructed between 1857 and 1858 by Charles Gray and serves as professional chambers and apartments. The building features a stucco exterior and has a concealed roof, showcasing an eclectic design inspired by the Florentine quattrocento palazzo style.

It stands four storeys tall with a basement and has a double fronted façade that is three windows wide, with a slightly narrower return. The ground and first floors are designed as one tall podium, marked at the corners by massive channelled quoin piers. The central doorway is "Romanesque" in style, featuring a shafted design and is topped by a bracketed cornice hood. Flanking windows are framed by pilasters and have tympani above them, with cornice hoods serving as sills for the first-floor windows, which are also pilastered and hooded.

On the second floor, there are widely spaced "Romanesque" arched pilastered windows, while the third floor features an arcaded range of nine windows, some of which are blind. This upper section is topped by a prominent bracketed and machicolated eaves cornice. The building also has a moulded sill course on the second floor and a band sill course at the top floor, with a similar but closer spaced design on the return side.
