Description

Nos. 27 and 28 Bedford Street, including No. 16 King Street, is a corner block of commercial premises with residential accommodation above. It was built between 1861 and 1862, with No. 28 added in 1872 to 1873, and No. 16 King Street features a refronting from around 1800 of an earlier house. The building is constructed of stucco and painted brick with stucco dressings and has slate roofs, showcasing Italianate detailing. It stands four storeys tall, with single window bays flanking a bowed tripartite window at the corner, and the outer bays are also tripartite. The front of No. 28 is three windows wide. The ground floors have been altered, while the upper floors feature single and tripartite recessed sash windows framed by Ionic pilasters with entablatures, and Doric pilasters on the second floor that support open pediments. The third-floor windows have plain architraves. The window bays are divided by rusticated pilasters, which carry a bracketed cornice and blocking course. No. 28 has a similar design but with windows that are closely set and large console brackets supporting a bold cornice and blocking course. No. 16 King Street has a two-window wide stock brick front with a slate mansard roof and an altered ground floor. The upper floors have recessed glazing bar sashes under flat gauged arches, and there is a parapet with coping.
