Description

Aldine House is a Grade II listed building located on Bedford Street in the City of Westminster, constructed around 1911 by architect E. Keynes Purchase. This building serves as offices and a shop and is designed in the Free Style Queen Anne style, featuring red brick with stone dressings and a slate roof.

The structure is four storeys tall with a basement and presents a nearly symmetrical façade. The upper floors are marked by a pair of tripartite bays on either side of a central bow, each consisting of three windows. There is a single window entrance at the right-hand north end and an oriel corner turret to the south, which has a three-window return to Chandos Place.

The ground floor showcases a well-crafted wooden Greek Doric shop front with segmental bowed windows, framed by pilasters that include cherub masks. These masks also flank the panelled doors, which feature patterned fanlights. The upper floors are adorned with recessed glazing bar sashes set beneath flat gauged arches. The central windows in the tripartite bays and the bow are highlighted with stone architraves, while the third-floor windows in the tripartite bays have archivolt arches, and the bow window is an oeil-de-boeuf with swags in the apron below.

The façade is further enhanced between the major bays by quasi pilasters that support a cornice with console brackets. Above the central bow, an attic is topped with a segmental pediment, and the corner turret is crowned with a finialed cupola. Additionally, Aldine House has a front at No. 66 Chandos Place that mirrors the design of the end bays on Bedford Street.
