Description

St. Peter's Hospital is a hospital building constructed between 1880 and 1882 by architect J.M. Brydon, with modifications made by Henry Clutton, the architect for the Bedford Estate. The building is designed in the Queen Anne style, resembling the Shaw manner, and is made of red brick with rubbed and carved brick trim and Portland stone dressings, topped with a tiled roof. It stands five storeys tall and features a symmetrical front that is eleven windows wide, with narrow central and end pavilions that resemble towers.

The ground floor has a main entrance located in the central pavilion, which includes a block dressed archivolt arched doorway framed by Doric columns with blocked shafts, flanked by cartouches. The windows display Shavian patterns, featuring mullioned and transomed glazing bar sashes, tripartite arched centre light transomed windows, and oriels above the entrance on the first and second floors. The first and second floors of the wings are framed by pilasters that rise from the ground floor cornice and support the main entablature over the second floor. The attic storey has a secondary order and a modillion crowning cornice, with large dormers set in a steep roof.

The central pavilion is topped with a pedimented Dutch gable, and the roof behind is crowned by a weathervaned cupola. The end pavilions are finished with ogee capped turrets. The front facing St. Paul's Churchyard has a similar pattern of fenestration. Originally, the ground floor was designed to accommodate shops, but during a remodelling of the interior in 1930, these were incorporated into the hospital.
