Description
Nos. 9 and 10 Henrietta Street are a pair of terrace houses built in 1726-27, with No. 10 being refaced in 1855 by James Lockyer and No. 9 matching in 1861. They feature painted Portland cement render and dressings, with slate roofs. The houses are four storeys tall with basements and each has three windows across the front. The ground floors have mid-20th century shop fronts beneath an entablature-fascia. The upper floors are adorned with recessed Victorian sash windows in plain architraves, featuring cornices on consoles on the first floor and moulded heads on the second floor. There are sill bands, a moulded dentil crowning cornice, and a balustraded parapet.
Inside No. 9, the original cut and carved string staircase is preserved, located in a panelled well, with three twisted balusters per tread and column newels. The staircase is simplified above the second floor landing with turned balusters and dado panelling. There is a pilastered opening with a coffered soffit to the cornice-beam between the hall and stairs, and the second and third floor rooms are panelled, with the latter featuring a carved chimneypiece at the front. No. 10 also retains its staircase, which has a cut string and differing turned balusters grouped as two per tread, along with a panelled well. The second floor rooms have panelling and box cornices, and there is an Adam style chimneypiece in the rear room.
