Description
These are a group of terraced town houses at 1-7 York Street, built around 1790 to 1800 as part of the Portman Estate development associated with Baker Street. The houses are constructed of stock brick, with Nos. 3 and 5 featuring channelled stucco and No. 7 having plain stucco to the ground floor; all have slate roofs, which are hidden from view on Nos. 1, 3, and 7. The buildings are four storeys high with basements. No. 5 has a dormered mansard roof. The fronts are three windows wide, except for No. 1, which has a four-window front. Each house has a semicircular arched doorway with a panelled door; No. 1 has sidelights and a radial patterned fanlight, No. 3 has panelled jambs, a doorhead with lion head stops, and a simple fanlight, No. 5 has a fluted head and jambs and a simple fanlight and No. 7 has a moulded head and jambs and a simple fanlight. Most windows are recessed sash windows with glazing bars, set within flat gauged red brick arches. A stucco plat band runs continuously to the first floor. Nos. 1 and 3 have stone-coped parapets, while Nos. 3 and 5 have a crowning stucco cornice and blocking course. Balconies with a continuous cast iron geometric pattern are present on the first floor of Nos. 1, 5 and 7. The property includes cast iron area railings with urn finials.
