Description
A row of terraced town houses forming the north side of Dorset Square, dating from around 1815 to 1820 as part of the Portman Estate development. The buildings are constructed of stock brick with channelled stucco to the ground floors, and have concealed slate roofs. They represent a unified block, extending over four storeys, with No. 18 having an additional fifth storey. Each house fronts with three windows. Semicircular arched doorways are present on the left, continuing to the central pair and then to the right; these doorways have panelled doors set within jambs of Greek Doric columns, topped with Greek key enrichment and fanlights. The upper floors contain recessed sash windows, most with glazing bars, set beneath flat, gauged arches. A plat band runs above the ground floor, and decorative stucco cornices and blocking courses crown the buildings. First-floor balconies display a geometric-anthemion pattern. Area railings are topped with urn finials. These townhouses have group value due to their contribution to the architectural character of Dorset Square.
