Description
No. 12 Floral Street, located in the City of Westminster, is a former parish school built in 1838 by E.H. Browne and later altered and largely refronted by C.G. Searle in 1860. The building is constructed of stucco with a slate roof and is designed in an Italianate style, likely recommended by Charles Parker, the Bedford Estate Surveyor.
The three-storey front is set back, featuring a four-storey entrance and staircase tower that projects to the building line. The façade is four windows wide, with the entrance located at the base of the tower. This entrance includes an archivolt keyed arch, a panelled door, and a blind lunette above, which has a date tablet from 1860. The recessed front displays tall, closely set windows with architraves and archivolt arches on each floor, featuring radial glazing in their heads. One ground floor window has been partly altered to serve as a door.
Additional architectural details include a panelled applied pedestal beneath the first-floor windows, a bracketed sill course on the second floor, and a crowning cornice that returns over the tower. The tower itself is designed as a belvedere-campanile, featuring rusticated quoins and a bracketed eaves cornice that supports a pyramidal roof covered in lead.
